Android Driving Mode Restores Bluetooth-Only DND Activation
Google has re-enabled a feature allowing Android's Driving mode to automatically activate Do Not Disturb (DND) only when the phone is connected to a vehicle's Bluetooth head unit. This update addresses a previous issue where Driving mode would often activate for passengers in a vehicle due to motion detection, even when their phone was not connected to the car.
Driving mode on Android is designed to reduce notifications when a user is operating a vehicle. Historically, this feature could be triggered by a Bluetooth connection, motion detection, or a combination of both.
In recent years, the Bluetooth-only activation option was removed, leading to automatic DND activation based solely on motion detection. This often resulted in users, including passengers, missing important calls or notifications even when they were not actively driving.
With the latest update, the option to activate Driving mode specifically when connected via Bluetooth has been restored. This ensures DND is enabled only for the driver's device, provided it is paired with the car's infotainment system.
Enabling the Feature
The feature is rolling out across various Android devices. Pixel devices will display the interface using the Material 3 Expressive UI, while other devices, such as the OnePlus 13R, will show a standard interface. This functionality is included in version 26.05.32 of Google Play Services.
To enable this setting, users can navigate to Settings > Modes > Driving, activate the "While driving" toggle, and then select the desired activation option, including Bluetooth connection.
Looking Ahead: Commute Mode
Separately, Google is developing a commute mode intended to help limit motion sickness. This feature is anticipated to be released in a future Android beta.
