Android Live Updates Visual Enhancements

Google is rolling out subtle visual upgrades to Live Updates on Android, visible in the latest Android Canary build. These updates aim to enhance the prominence of the feature's elements.

Key Changes

  • Progress Bar: The horizontal progress bar for Live Updates has been made slightly wider.
  • Action Buttons: Buttons for actions on Live Updates now appear more noticeable, featuring text encased in a pill-shaped border. Previously, these buttons only displayed text. The current iteration shows an unfilled button, suggesting potential further design adjustments.
  • Icon Placement: The app's icon is now positioned at the top of the Live Updates tile, moving from its previous left-side placement. This change allows the horizontal progress bar to extend across the entire width of the tile.
  • Consistency: These design changes are consistent across the home screen, notification shade, and lock screen.

Background

Live Updates were introduced with Android 16 (note: this version number might be a typo in the original article, as Live Activities were introduced with Android 12/13).

This feature provides real-time activity updates through a horizontal progress bar, appearing as a floating notification around the selfie camera.

While initially designed for applications like food delivery and ride-hailing, Google has also tested Live Updates for Google Maps to display route segments and traffic density.

Rollout Status

These visual enhancements are currently rolling out widely within the Android Canary build. It is not yet confirmed if these specific changes will be included in the upcoming Android 17 beta or if further modifications are planned before a broader public release. Other visual aspects, such as colors and the thickness of the progress bar, remain unchanged.
