Leadership Transition at DP World: New CEO Appointed Amid Sulayem's Departure

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem has been replaced as the Chief Executive Officer of DP World, Dubai's largest port operator. The company announced the appointment of new leadership on Friday.

The company announced the appointment of Essa Kazim as chairman and Yuvraj Narayan as group CEO on Friday.

The change occurred after details of Sulayem's past relationship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein were made public. U.S. Department of Justice files revealed that Epstein had referred to Sulayem as a "close personal friend" and one of his "most trusted friends." Sulayem has not been accused of any criminal wrongdoing.

A disclosure to Nasdaq Dubai, where DP World has listed bonds, confirmed Sulayem's resignation as "effective immediately."

Sulayem's Tenure and Achievements

Sulayem had served as chairman of DP World since 2007 and CEO since 2016. During his leadership, he oversaw significant growth and expansion.

He oversaw the growth of Dubai's Jebel Ali port into a major deep-water shipping hub and the expansion of DP World into an international logistics empire that manages ports handling approximately one-tenth of the world's container trade.

Company's Forward Strategy

DP World's statement regarding the new appointments affirmed their support for the company's strategy for sustainable growth. The appointments reinforce its role in strengthening global supply chains and Dubai's position as a trade and logistics hub. The statement, however, did not mention Sulayem's departure or its cause.

New Leadership and Outgoing Figure Profiles

Essa Kazim previously served as the Governor of the DIFC, Dubai's financial center. Yuvraj Narayan was DP World's deputy CEO and CFO since 2005.

Sulayem is a prominent business figure in Dubai, having played a significant role in the emirate's economic development, including a prior leadership role at Nakheel Properties.
