Samsung Sends LPDDR6X Samples to Qualcomm for Future Processors
Samsung has reportedly shipped LPDDR6X memory chip samples to Qualcomm for use in upcoming processors. This development follows Samsung's announcement regarding the mass production of sixth-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM4) chips. According to a report from The Bell, Samsung Electronics provided LPDDR6X memory samples to Qualcomm for processors projected for a second-half 2027 launch. This action is notable as LPDDR6 DRAM has not yet been commercially launched by Samsung, and the LPDDR6X chips remain under development.

Potential Applications & Key Partnership
Industry sources suggest Samsung’s LPDDR6X DRAM may be utilized in Qualcomm’s AI250 accelerator cards for data centers and future automotive chips. The AI250 system is anticipated to include over 1,000GB of LPDDR6X DRAM, positioning Samsung as a potential primary memory supplier for Qualcomm.
The Evolution of LPDDR Memory
LPDDR (low-power double data rate) memory is commonly employed in devices such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, and wearables. Nvidia has recently started incorporating LPDDR memory into its AI accelerator systems, underscoring its growing importance in high-performance computing.
LPDDR6 provides a maximum data transfer speed of 14.4Gbps and a peak bandwidth of 38.4GB/s, which are respective increases of 44% and 20% compared to LPDDR5X chips. LPDDR6X memory is anticipated to offer enhanced performance and efficiency, although the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) has not yet finalized its standard.

Samsung has historically been a leading semiconductor memory chip manufacturer. In previous years, the company faced challenges in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) market, including the HBM3E segment, which saw increased competition from other manufacturers.
Following past market performance, Samsung has reportedly increased the pace of development for HBM4 chips for AI servers, as well as LPDDR6 and LPDDR6X memory, for applications in consumer electronics and data centers.
