Kansas State Terminates Head Men's Basketball Coach Jerome Tang "For Cause"

Kansas State University has terminated head men's basketball coach Jerome Tang, citing "for cause" grounds following public comments he made regarding his players. The decision was announced on Sunday, with associate head coach Matthew Driscoll named as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.

Termination Details and Stated Reasons

The university's Athletic Director, Gene Taylor, confirmed the termination. The stated grounds for the termination centered on Tang's public criticism of his players after a significant loss, which the university indicated constituted potential embarrassment and violated contractual obligations.

Tang's employment contract includes clauses requiring him to act consistently with his position as head coach and university representative. It also mandates avoiding actions that could bring public disrepute or embarrassment to K-State Athletics or the university. The contract further stipulates establishing and enforcing conduct standards for student-athletes and ensuring their fair and safe treatment.

Public Comments and Reaction

The termination occurred days after Tang's remarks following a 91-62 home defeat to Cincinnati on Wednesday. After the game, Tang stated:

"These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform. There will be very few of them in it next year," and added, "They don’t love this place, so they don’t deserve to be here."

These comments, along with the subsequent removal of players' names from their jerseys for a game against Houston, drew national attention.

Tang released a statement expressing his deep disappointment with the university's decision and disagreeing with the characterization of his termination. He asserted that he always acted with integrity.

Contractual Implications

The "for cause" termination is significant as Tang's contract included an $18.7 million buyout if he were fired without cause before April 30. This decision, if upheld, could allow Kansas State to avoid paying this substantial buyout.

In 2024, Athletic Director Gene Taylor had extended Tang’s contract through 2031, which included a pay increase. Had Tang been retained for another year, his buyout would have decreased to approximately $15.75 million. K-State Athletics faces budget constraints, partly due to new revenue-sharing for athletes, and a nearly $19 million buyout would have added to these financial pressures.

Coaching Tenure and Team Performance

Jerome Tang was midway through his fourth season as head coach. His overall record at Kansas State was 71-56, with a 29-38 mark in Big 12 conference play.

Season-by-Season Overview
  • First Season (2022-23): The team achieved a 26-10 record and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. This success was supported by the use of the transfer portal and the retention of players such as Keyontae Johnson, Nae’Qwan Tomlin, and Markquis Nowell.
  • Subsequent Seasons: The following season included Tomlin's dismissal and resulted in an NIT appearance. The 2024-25 team finished 15-16.
  • Current Season: The team's current record stands at 10-15 overall and 1-11 in the Big 12 conference, placing them tied for last. The team is projected to miss the NCAA Tournament for a third consecutive season.
Team Performance Metrics

The current roster was built with a focus on shooters, and has shown improved 3-point shooting (36.4%) and scoring from P.J. Haggerty (23.3 points per game). However, defensive rankings have fallen significantly, from top 40 in Tang's first three years to 137th.

Off-the-Court Issues

Tang's tenure also involved several off-the-court issues. These included the domestic battery arrest of graduate assistant Mark Vital and multiple in-season player dismissals, such as Nae’Qwan Tomlin and Achor Achor.

Fan Sentiment and Future Plans

Prior to Tang’s recent comments, some Kansas State fans had expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s performance, with some calling for a buyout of his contract. During the Cincinnati game, some students reportedly wore paper bags over their heads, with one displaying Tang’s buyout cost.

Kansas State will complete the remainder of the season under interim coach Matthew Driscoll and will begin its search for a new head coach.
