Powranna Store Cattle Sale Exceeds Expectations

The Powranna Store Cattle Sale yielded positive results, exceeding expectations despite initial concerns regarding a dry summer.

A total of 2483 cattle were yarded.

Sale Overview and Pricing

Angus and Angus-infused cattle comprised approximately 70% of the sale. Hereford numbers were limited, with only a few first-cross lines available, and store cattle completed the lots.

Angus steer weaner calves traded for 530-600 cents, with prices dependent on weight, while heifer portions ranged from 460-570 cents. Yearling off cattle achieved top prices around 2000 cents.

Agent Insights and Market Trends

Elders livestock agent Gavin Coombe noted that prices saw a 10-20 cent correction in some categories, which he attributed to adjustments in the fat market from the processor end.

Coombe stated that current margins for cattle rearing, growing, and selling to processors are favorable, reaching historical highs for processing cattle at this time of year over the past 30 years.

Both Elders and Nutrien agents confirmed continued market positivity, citing signs of an early rain break and ample fodder from a strong hay and silage season. Nutrien Livestock agent Warren Johnston highlighted the market's strength despite ongoing dry summer conditions in parts of the state, noting that sufficient bulk feed remains in the north-west. Johnston added that a couple of good autumn rains could lead to an exceptional growing season, and that a strong prime cattle market contributes to buyer confidence.

Vendor Participation and Upcoming Sales

Glencoe and Greenlawn, two major vendors from the east coast, participated in the sale despite experiencing significant dry conditions.

An Australian Wool Network sale is scheduled for later in the month, marking the beginning of the calf-selling season, followed by alternating weekly sales from Nutrien and Elders.
