Ella Macens's "My Heart On Yours": A Symphony of Love and Resilience
Music has long been utilized by musicians to express love, with classical composers, in particular, using instrumental compositions to convey complex emotions. Australian composer Ella Macens continued this tradition with her latest work, "My Heart On Yours."
Commissioned by ABC Classic and performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the piece initially served as a love letter for ABC Classic's 50th birthday.
The composition began as Macens's reflection on the beauty and pain of love affected by distance.
It subsequently evolved to explore broader facets of love, including its capacity to heal from hate and harm, following Macens's first-hand experience of the Bondi terror attack.
Composing Deep Emotions Without Words
Historically, classical composers have often expressed deep emotions without words. Examples include Frederick Chopin's piano pieces dedicated to Maria WodziĆska, Edward Elgar's "Salut D'amour" for his future wife, and Edvard Grieg's "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen" as an anniversary gift.
During the composition of "My Heart On Yours," Macens drew upon feelings of nostalgia, reminiscence, longing, joy, and grief, noting a personal connection that deepened her understanding of love. The initial inspiration followed a four-month trip to Latvia, where she reconnected with family and places.
Life's Impact: Birth, Bond, and Bondi
Two significant life events influenced the music's development.
First, the birth of her closest friend's child introduced themes of sisterhood, bond, and the protection of fragility into the piece.
Soon after, Macens was present during the Bondi terror attack. Her experience of running and hiding, combined with accounts of individuals acting as human shields, led to the inclusion of a "loud, foreboding, intense passage" within the composition.
Macens recognized her grief as "love in the form of compassion and empathy" for those impacted.
Healing Through Harmony
The completion of the music supported Macens's healing process. The previously harrowing passage ultimately became a moment of "reclamation and personal power" for the composer.
"My Heart On Yours" is scheduled for its premiere by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra during a free outdoor concert on February 14 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne.
