Google Maps Custom Car Icons Coming Directly to Android Auto

Google Maps is preparing to integrate its custom car icon and color selection screen directly into Android Auto displays.

This development was reported based on an APK teardown of Android Auto version 16.2.660604. Currently, users can customize their car icon (from 5 modern and 3 traditional designs) and select colors through the Google Maps mobile application on Android. These customizations then reflect within the Android Auto version of Google Maps.

Streamlined Customization On-the-Go

The upcoming feature will eliminate the need to use the mobile app for customization. The selection screen will be accessible directly within Android Auto's navigation settings, under a section labeled "Driving avatar." It is expected to offer the same customization options as the mobile app.

Development Status

While the discovery of this hidden option indicates the feature is in late-stage development, a specific release date for its public availability on Android Auto has not been announced.
