Bathurst 12 Hour: Event Overview and Essential Guide

The Bathurst 12 Hour race is set to feature a formidable grid of 35 cars, with a significant 31 entries being GT3 cars. This year sees a strong manufacturer presence, with Mercedes-AMG leading with 10 entries. Porsche follows with five cars, notably including Earl Bamber Motorsport's return with a livery that pays homage to its 2019 winner. Ford joins the fray with a single Mustang from Haupt Racing Team, piloted by the impressive trio of Broc Feeney, Christopher Mies, and Dennis Olsen. Corvette also fields two cars, a Pro and a Pro-Am entry, both managed by Johor Motorsports Racing.

With 31 GT3 cars on the grid, including strong showings from Mercedes-AMG, Porsche, Ford, and Corvette, the Bathurst 12 Hour promises intense competition across multiple classes.

Race Classes Explained

The Bathurst 12 Hour competition is structured into several distinct classes to accommodate a variety of vehicles:

  • Class A: Exclusively designated for GT3 cars.
  • Class B: Reserved for Porsche Carrera Cup cars.
  • Class C: For FIA GT4 homologated vehicles.
  • Class I (Invitational Cup): Features cars that do not fit the above structures, such as IRC GT and GT2 vehicles.

GT3 Driver Categorisation within Class A

Within the primary Class A for GT3 cars, entries are further sub-divided based on stringent driver categorisation rules:

  • Pro (PRO): Allows for three drivers with no categorisation restrictions.
  • Pro-Am (PAM): Requires either three drivers (one Platinum, Gold, or Silver, plus two Bronze) OR four drivers (as above, with the fourth driver being Platinum, Gold, Silver, or Bronze).
  • Silver Cup (SIL): Consists of three or four drivers, all of whom must be categorised as Silver or Bronze.
  • Bronze (BRO): Involves either three drivers (one Platinum or Gold, one Silver, and one Bronze) OR four drivers (as above, with the fourth driver being Silver or Bronze).

Mandatory Driver Time Regulations

Driver time regulations are critical for fairness and safety in endurance racing:

  • Maximum Continuous Driving Time: 150 minutes for Platinum, Gold, or Silver rated drivers; 120 minutes for Bronze and non-categorised drivers.
  • Driving periods are precisely measured from when a driver crosses the timing line at pit exit after a change, until they cross the timing line at pit entry before leaving the car or the scheduled race end.
  • Penalties, including potential disqualification, will be applied for any failure to meet minimum drive time or for exceeding maximum drive time.
