Major Paper Sewing Pattern Supplier Winds Down Australian Operations

View source

Simplicity and McCall Pattern Service Australia, a major supplier of paper sewing patterns, announced its closure and the winding up of its Sydney warehouse as part of a global restructure. The company encompassed prominent brands such as Simplicity, McCall's, Vogue Patterns, and Butterick, collectively known as the "big four," along with New Look, Know Me, and Burda. These brands were noted for supplying a significant portion of paper patterns to retailers like Spotlight.

Industry Shift Towards Digital Patterns

Industry observers and sewers indicate that the legacy brands did not adapt to market changes, particularly the shift towards digital patterns. This oversight has significantly impacted the commercial industry.

Ann Grose, founder of Designer Stitch, noted that independent designers have offered PDF sewing patterns for over two decades, impacting the commercial industry.

Mixed Reactions from the Sewing Community

Reactions within the sewing community are varied. Michelle Sanger expressed concern about the potential decline of pattern-making if left solely to independent designers. Conversely, Siobhán Leyne stated that the closure would not affect her or her community, as they primarily support independent retailers and digital patterns.

Janet Ogilvie, founder of The Sewing School, views the decline of paper patterns and the rise of online tutorials as a natural evolution, citing younger generations' use of upcycling and digital resources.

The Evolving Landscape of Pattern Making

Independent pattern makers can develop, test, and distribute digital patterns globally and more rapidly, often reflecting current trends and accommodating a wider range of body types. The liquidator, McGrathNicol, is working to sell remaining stock to retailers, including Spotlight, and denies instructing stockists to destroy inventory. Many sewers possess extensive collections of vintage patterns, suggesting a continued resource for garment making.
