Chrome for Android Expands Tab Pinning Rollout

Google is expanding the rollout of tab pinning in Chrome for Android, a feature initially announced in December.

This action moves the page to the front/top of the grid and replaces the 'x' close icon with a pin icon, preventing accidental closure.

How to Pin Tabs

Users can access this feature by long-pressing a tab within the tab grid and selecting the "Pin tab" option. Upon pinning, the 'x' close icon is replaced with a distinct pin icon. A crucial aspect of this feature is that pinned tabs also cannot be closed by swiping in the grid view, adding an extra layer of protection against accidental closure.

Dedicated Pinned Tab Carousel

For improved navigation and access to pinned content, when not at the top of the grid, a new docked carousel displays pinned tabs. This carousel conveniently shows favicons and page names, allowing users to easily scroll through and tap to open their desired pages.

Unpinning and Wider Release

Tabs can be unpinned and closed by performing another long-press.

This functionality is becoming more widely available with Chrome version 144, providing a similar experience to the desktop browser.
