H5N1 2.3.4.4b Shows Enhanced Zoonotic Potential
Researchers have identified a significant development in the evolution of H5N1 viruses. More recent clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 viruses exhibit an enhanced ability to infect and replicate within bovine cells and tissues compared to older variants.
This increased capacity is particularly concerning as the spread of these viruses in mammals contributes to an increase in variants possessing genetic traits that can counteract human barriers against zoonotic influenza.
The findings suggest that the zoonotic potential of H5N1 2.3.4.4b is relatively high.
