Julia Simon Claims Olympic Gold Medals Amidst Fraud Conviction
French biathlete Julia Simon, 29, recently secured an Olympic gold medal in the women's 15km biathlon, in addition to contributing to a gold medal win in the 4x6km mixed relay. These athletic achievements occurred as Simon navigates the aftermath of an October court decision that issued her a three-month suspended jail sentence for credit card fraud.
Recent Competitive Success
In a recent competition, Julia Simon earned an Olympic gold medal in the women's 15km biathlon. In the same race, her teammate Lou Jeanmonnot secured a silver medal. Notably, Justine Braisaz-Bouchet, whose credit card details were used by Simon in the fraud case, finished 80th.
Simon also anchored the French 4x6km mixed relay team, where her performance, including perfect 10-for-10 shooting accuracy on her final leg, contributed to France's gold medal victory.
Following the mixed relay, Simon commented on feeling "a bit of pressure" but also "very confident," stating she "knew what I had to do, especially on the shooting range." After securing the Olympic gold, Simon was observed making a gesture with a finger to her lips, which she indicated was for "one person" she had discussed it with, declining further elaboration. She also declined to discuss her conviction or ban, emphasizing her focus on the sport.
Legal Proceedings and Sanctions
In October, a French court issued Simon a three-month suspended jail sentence and a €15,000 fine for theft and credit-card fraud.
Simon admitted to using credit card details belonging to her teammate Justine Braisaz-Bouchet and a French team physiotherapist. The fraudulent purchases, amounting to approximately $2,300 (over €2,000), were made online between 2021 and 2022.
Simon initially denied the allegations for three years, claiming identity theft. However, she admitted guilt during a court hearing after photographs of the credit card were discovered on her phone. She stated, "I confess the accusations but I don’t remember committing them," describing her actions as a "blackout" and attributing them to "incomprehension," for which she sought psychological assistance.
The French Skiing Federation imposed its own sanctions on Simon, including a six-month ban, with five months suspended. This structured sanction allowed her to compete in both pre-Games events and the Games themselves. Following the initial scandal, Braisaz-Bouchet reported experiencing online abuse, noting that some perceived her as the "troublemaker."

Julia Simon, 29, has a distinguished career in biathlon, marked by numerous past accomplishments. These include 10 World Championship gold medals and a silver medal in the mixed relay at the 2022 Beijing Games, alongside multiple first-place finishes in World Cup events.
