NextSense Unveils Smartbuds: In-Ear EEG for Proactive Sleep Modulation

NextSense has launched Smartbuds, wireless earbuds designed to measure and modulate sleep using in-ear electroencephalography (EEG) sensors. These earbuds represent a significant shift from traditional sleep tracking devices, which primarily monitor sleep stages, to real-time intervention.

How Smartbuds Work

The Smartbuds system deploys six EEG sensors within the ear canal to detect neural activity directly. Upon identifying transitions between sleep stages or brief awakenings, the device delivers precisely timed audio stimulation.

This stimulation is intended to reinforce slow-wave activity, a phase of sleep associated with physiological recovery, memory consolidation, and metabolic regulation.

The company states that this technology aims to improve sleep quality rather than merely providing sleep data. Historically, EEG has been confined to clinical and research settings. Integrating EEG into earbuds makes neural data collection more accessible for continuous use.

Beta Testing Shows Promising Results

During beta testing, NextSense reported increases in slow-wave activity over more than 100 nights. Nearly half of participants also reported subjective improvements in perceived sleep quality and morning recovery. Over 1,000 nights of real-world EEG data have been collected through this process.

Pricing and Market Positioning

Smartbuds are retailed at $399.99, with an early launch price of $249. They require a subscription for ear tip replacements and are currently compatible with recent iPhone models. This pricing and compatibility place the product within a premium market segment.
