Chinese Naval Flotilla Operated Closer to Australia's EEZ Than Previously Understood

Details have emerged from Senate estimates concerning the movements of a Chinese naval flotilla near Australia late last year, with vessels reportedly operating closer to Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) than previously understood.

Flotilla's Proximity

The flotilla comprised four People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA-N) ships: a frigate, a cruiser, a refuelling ship, and a landing helicopter dock.

These vessels passed approximately "5 or 7 miles" outside Australia's EEZ.

ADF Monitoring and Route

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) closely monitored the vessels. Chief of the Defence Force, David Johnston, indicated that their closest proximity occurred off the north-eastern Queensland coast.

The flotilla's route took it through several Pacific islands before it proceeded north, just beyond Australia's 200-mile zone.

Demonstration of Capacity

Admiral Johnston stated that the ADF's response involved close coordination with regional partners. He described the activity as a demonstration of the Chinese military's growing capacity, particularly its navy.

He added that this showcased the Chinese navy's ability to operate further from its shores and deploy into the region.
