Tariffs Projected to Impose Significant Costs on American Households, Analysis Finds

A recent analysis by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation indicates that tariffs enacted by the previous administration are projected to impose significant costs on American households.

Key Findings

The report estimates that these tariffs will result in an average tax increase per US household of $1,000 in 2025.

This amount is projected to rise to $1,300 in 2026.

According to the Tax Foundation, the tariffs represent the largest US tax increase as a percentage of GDP (0.54 percent for 2026) since 1993.

These findings align with an earlier study from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, which reported that American consumers have borne 96% of the cost of the tariffs, with foreign exporters absorbing the remaining 4%.
