Indigenous Leader Kerry Blackman Committed to Trial on Sexual Assault Charges

Kerry Blackman, a prominent Indigenous leader from Bundaberg and former chief executive of Gidarjil Development Corporation, has been committed to stand trial on charges of sexual assault.

Mr. Blackman faces five counts of sexual assault and one count of common assault. The trial date has been set for the June sitting of the Bundaberg District Court. This decision follows a hearing where Judge Brad Farr confirmed the case would proceed.

Defence solicitor Chanyn Munzer stated that they are currently awaiting an alibi statement from the Crown.

Crown prosecutor Miranda Hickey indicated that attempts to obtain a statement from Dr. Blackman's wife, which is intended to serve as the alibi, have been unsuccessful despite multiple attempts. These efforts included texts, phone calls, and communication through the defendant's solicitors. As a next step, the arresting officer is scheduled to visit the woman's home, a task Judge Farr noted could be completed before the trial commences.
