Google Drops Major Fitbit Update: AI Coach, Redesign, & Medical Record Integration

Fitbit's latest update brings a complete app overhaul, an AI-powered health coach, and deeper health tracking—including medical record integration—to Android and iOS.

Public Preview and App Redesign

Fitbit has expanded the Public Preview of its redesigned application to all free users. The new app features a streamlined four-tab interface: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health.

While the redesigned interface is free, the AI-powered Coach and custom fitness plans remain exclusive to Fitbit Premium subscribers.

AI Personal Health Coach Expansion

Fitbit's AI health coach, powered by Google's Gemini AI, is now available to a wider audience. Launched initially for Android users in the U.S. in October 2024, the feature now includes:

  • iOS users in the United States
  • Both iOS and Android users in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore

To access the AI coach, users need:

  • An active Fitbit Premium subscription
  • A Google account signed into the Fitbit app
  • One of 14 supported devices (Fitbit trackers, smartwatches, or Pixel Watch)

The coach acts as a fitness trainer, sleep expert, and health advisor. The setup involves a 5–10 minute conversation to understand user goals, preferences, and equipment. Workouts and recommendations update dynamically based on real-time data like weekly progress or injuries.

Fitbit noted a gradual rollout "over the next few days," so the feature may not appear immediately for all eligible users.

Version 4.68 Update: Sleep Log Editing & Coach Enhancements

The latest version (4.68) for Android and iOS includes:

  • Sleep log editing restored for Android users. Edit by selecting the previous night's summary, then using the three-dot menu to choose "Edit Sleep." iOS support is expected "soon."
  • Personalized motivational messages in the Today tab: Morning Moments, Post-Workout Summaries, and End-of-Day/Week updates.
  • Conversational Check-Ins allowing users to interact with the coach via a revamped text feature.
  • Step-by-step workout guidance when receiving a workout from Coach.
  • Updated Fitness Coach recommendations for personalized weekly targets based on user feedback.
  • Users with previous plans can download or delete existing scheduled plans.
  • A future update will add "Adapt missions" or "Adapt workout" buttons in the Fitness tab.

Version 4.66 Update: New Public Preview Features

Version 4.66 introduces several new tools for Android users (iOS version is also fully launched):

Ask Coach Updates
Tapping "Ask Coach" and selecting "Log" now shows:

  • Hydration: Similar to the stable experience
  • Food: Simplified search functionality (barcode reader not yet visible)

Health Tab Enhancements
The "Health" tab under "Focus areas" now includes:

  • Nutrition: Statistics for Energy burned, Hydration, Calorie target, Calories intake, Fat, Carbs, and Protein
  • Mental wellbeing: Mindfulness and Body responses

Stress Management Rebranding
The "Stress management score" has been renamed "Resilience," categorized as Low, Balanced, or Optimal. "Body Responses" features help users understand their physical reaction to stress.

Cycle Health
The "Cycle health" feature is available in Focus areas for period logging. Fitbit Premium subscribers receive personalized cycle insights via the Coach.

Health and Medical Record Integration

Fitbit announced significant new features for the Public Preview program:

Enhanced Sleep Tracking

  • Sleep stage accuracy (REM, Light, Deep) improved by 15% using advanced machine learning.
  • Better differentiation between attempts to sleep and actual sleep, including interruptions and naps.
  • A new Sleep Score experience will evaluate aspects of rest like sound sleep duration and time to fall asleep.
  • Sleep updates roll out over the next few days; the new Sleep Score experience arrives in the coming weeks.

Medical Record Integration (Starting Next Month)
US Public Preview users can link medical records (lab results, medications, visit history) with the Fitbit app. Key details:

  • Enables more relevant coaching, such as summarizing cholesterol lab results and highlighting trends.
  • In future months, users can securely share records with family or providers via Smart Health Link URL or QR code.
  • Medical records are stored securely and will not be used for advertising.
  • Fitbit is collaborating with partners including b.well and CLEAR for data integration.

This integration marks a major step toward making Fitbit a central hub for personal health data.

Additional Health Features

  • A new "Get care now" Fitbit Lab research study will evaluate conversational AI for navigating health during virtual visits.
  • Public Preview users can integrate continuous glucose monitor (CGM) data via Health Connect, allowing the coach to provide insights on how workouts or food impact glucose levels.

New Health Tracking Features for Free Users

  • Set calorie targets, log meals, and track calorie and water intake
