U.S. Skier Ben Ogden Claims Double Silver in Val di Fiemme

U.S. skier Ben Ogden secured two silver medals in cross-country skiing events held in Val di Fiemme, Italy. Ogden earned an individual silver in the classic-style sprint, marking the first time a U.S. man has won an Olympic cross-country skiing medal since 1976. He subsequently partnered with Gus Schumacher to claim a second silver medal in the men's team sprint.

Individual Sprint Classic Silver

Ben Ogden, 25, secured a silver medal in the men's classic-style cross-country skiing sprint event. The competition took place at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

This achievement represents the first time a U.S. man has reached an Olympic podium in cross-country skiing in 48 years.

The previous U.S. male medalist was Bill Koch, also from Vermont, who won silver in the 50-kilometer classic at the 1976 Innsbruck Winter Games. Ogden participated in the Bill Koch Youth Ski League during his formative years and has skied with Koch.

Race Details and Progression

Ogden completed the sprint race in three minutes and 40 seconds, finishing second. Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo of Norway won the gold medal with a time of three minutes and 39 seconds. Oskar Opstad Vike, also from Norway, secured the bronze medal in his Olympic debut.

During the race progression:

  • Ogden recorded the second-fastest time in the qualification round.
  • He advanced through the quarter-finals and semi-finals to reach the final heat.
  • In the semi-finals, Ogden competed for second place with Lauri Vuorinen of Finland, with Vuorinen winning in a photo finish.
  • Ogden progressed to the finals as the fastest "lucky loser."
  • Fellow U.S. skier JC Schoonmaker also qualified for the finals in the sprint classic.

U.S. Women's Sprint Performances

In related women's classic sprint races, U.S. skier Jessie Diggins did not advance. Julia Kern, another U.S. racer, reached the finals and finished in sixth place.

Team Sprint Silver

Ben Ogden earned his second silver medal, competing alongside Gus Schumacher in the men's Olympic team sprint, also held in Val di Fiemme, Italy. Norway, represented by Johannes Klaebo, secured the gold medal in this event. This win contributed to Klaebo's record of ten overall gold medals in the Winter Olympics, including five in the current Games. Italy, with Federico Pellegrino, earned the bronze medal.

Women's Team Sprint Results

In the women's team sprint event, U.S. skiers Jessie Diggins and Julia Kern placed fifth. Sweden, with Jonna Sundling, won gold in the women's team sprint, followed by Switzerland with silver, and Germany with bronze.

Athlete Insights and Future Competitions

This marks Ben Ogden's third appearance at the Olympic Games.

Jessie Diggins, 34, is a prominent figure in U.S. cross-country skiing. She has previously won four Olympic medals, including a gold in the team sprint event eight years prior with former teammate Kikkan Randall. Diggins has announced her retirement from professional cross-country skiing following a final competition next month.

Both Diggins and Kern are anticipated to compete individually in a 50-kilometer endurance race. This event marks the first time women are permitted to race this distance in the Olympics. Ogden and Schumacher are also expected to participate in the men's 50-kilometer event.
