Stefon Diggs Addresses Future with New England Patriots After Super Bowl Loss
Wide receiver Stefon Diggs discussed his future with the New England Patriots after the team concluded its season with a Super Bowl loss. Diggs, who is currently under a three-year contract, expressed his expectation to remain with the team for the upcoming 2026 season, while the Patriots consider various contract options.
Diggs Anticipates Staying with the Team
Following the Patriots' 29-13 Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Diggs addressed questions regarding his return for the next season.
"Unless they opt out of the contract. I anticipate being here, so I hope so. Love my guys. I had a hell of a year playing with them. Built some real family-like bond, so I hope so, I don’t control it though," Diggs stated, as reported by MassLive’s Mark Daniels.
Diggs also reflected on his professional career experiences, including his time in Minnesota, Buffalo, and Houston. He noted, "I don’t compare and contrast. You know, comparison is the thief of joy. I had a good time at all those places. Did it work out? No. But I’m happy where I’m at right now and embrace what I got going on here, so I’m just super thankful." This statement highlights his current contentment and focus on his present situation.
Contract Status and Financial Implications
Stefon Diggs is currently under a three-year free agent contract with the New England Patriots. For the upcoming season, his contract includes a $26.5 million cap hit, with a $20.6 million base salary that is not guaranteed.
The New England Patriots have several options regarding Diggs' contract for the 2026 season:
- If Diggs is released before June 1, the team would save $16.8 million against the salary cap and incur $9.7 million in dead money.
- In 2027, releasing Diggs would result in $22.5 million in cap savings with $4 million in dead money.
The team has a specific timeframe to finalize its plans for Diggs' future, indicating a significant decision looms.
Season Performance Overview
Diggs concluded his initial season with the New England Patriots, having successfully returned to play following a torn ACL in 2024.
