Apple CarPlay Expands with Third-Party AI Chatbots and New Application Integrations

View source

The Apple CarPlay platform is undergoing a significant expansion with the introduction of voice-based third-party AI chatbot support and the integration of new applications, including ChatGPT, Google Meet, and Audiomack. These changes are facilitated by iOS 26.4 and have been detailed in updates to Apple's CarPlay Developer Guide.

Background and Platform Updates

Apple has been preparing to update CarPlay with support for voice-based interactions in AI applications. The release of iOS 26.4 has officially implemented this support, enabling a new category of "voice-based conversational apps" on the platform. This follows the prior launch of CarPlay Ultra and changes introduced with iOS 26.

According to reports from Bloomberg, Apple is working to implement support for these applications over the coming months. The company's CarPlay Developer Guide, updated in February 2026, now officially lists "voice-based conversational apps" as a supported application category.

New App Category: Voice-Based Conversational Applications

Starting with iOS 26.4, CarPlay supports voice-based conversational applications. Apple specifies that these applications must primarily use voice interaction upon launch, respond appropriately to user queries, and perform actions. They are required to be optimized for voice interaction in a driving environment and should avoid displaying text and imagery in query responses.

A new voice control screen has been implemented to provide visual feedback for these conversational applications.

AI apps intending to integrate with CarPlay are required to incorporate support for this voice control screen. A specific software entitlement is necessary for voice-based conversational apps, and chatbot companies must update their applications to add CarPlay compatibility.

Specific Application Integrations

Several third-party applications have launched or are in development for CarPlay:

ChatGPT: OpenAI's ChatGPT is the first AI chatbot application available on CarPlay. It offers a voice-only interface for interacting with the assistant. The app displays titles of past conversations but does not show text or images from conversations for safety reasons.

Google Meet: The Google Meet application allows users to join scheduled meetings, view upcoming schedules, and participate in audio calls directly from CarPlay. Video calls are not viewable on the interface due to safety protocols.

Audiomack: The music streaming and downloading service, which focuses on independent artists and genres including Afrobeats and hip-hop, has launched on CarPlay. Its interface includes Discover, Charts, Playlists, and My Library tabs.

WhatsApp (In Beta): A redesigned version of the WhatsApp application for CarPlay is currently in beta testing. While the existing WhatsApp app offers limited Siri-based functionality, the upcoming version is expected to display recent chats, phone calls, and a list of favorite contacts.

Grok (Announced): The latest version of the Grok application for iPhone includes a placeholder indicating future CarPlay support, with a message stating "Grok Voice mode coming soon to CarPlay." xAI has not announced a release date for this feature.

Restrictions and Limitations

The new AI applications will operate independently and will not replace Siri within CarPlay. Apple is not permitting the replacement of the Siri button or its wake word. Users will be required to manually open their preferred chatbot's application on the car's infotainment screen.

These voice-based applications will not possess the ability to control vehicle or iPhone functions. Developers will have the option to configure their applications to automatically activate voice mode upon opening.

Siri Development

Apple has previously announced that Google Gemini will power an updated version of Siri, expected to be released this year. Future iOS versions, such as iOS 27, are anticipated to include additional enhancements to Siri's AI capabilities.

Developer Adoption and Availability

The integration of voice-based AI applications requires adoption from app developers. While iOS 26.4 provides the foundational support, companies such as OpenAI and Google must update their respective applications to enable CarPlay functionality. ChatGPT and Google Meet are currently ranked as popular free applications on the U.S. App Store. OpenAI offers native ChatGPT apps for Mac and iPhone, and Google provides a native Gemini app for iPhone.

iOS 26.4 is currently in its beta phase and is projected for release this spring.

Users can access new applications on CarPlay by ensuring the latest versions are installed on their iPhone.
