Former Melbourne Demons defender Steven May has retired from the AFL, days before the beginning of the 2025 season. The sudden decision follows a police visit to his home, an ongoing legal case, and a month-long absence from his club.
Retirement Announcement
May announced his retirement on social media on Sunday night, following a negotiated settlement with the Melbourne Demons, with whom he was still under contract.
"It's with a heavy heart that I've decided to step away and retire from the AFL. It's an incredibly tough decision to make on the eve of the season but I know it's the right one for myself, my family and the team."
He thanked both the Gold Coast Suns and the Melbourne Football Club for the opportunities they provided during his career.
Recent Events and Absence
May had been absent from the club for approximately one month prior to his retirement. The Melbourne Football Club confirmed that Victoria Police attended May's residence in late January following a complaint, though the club did not provide further details regarding the circumstances of the visit.
Speaking on SEN radio, May revealed that he experienced a mental breakdown in late January. He stated that he had completed preseason training but felt "lost and unsure," ultimately deciding to retire before a club list deadline to allow Melbourne to recruit another player.
Ongoing Legal Case
May and Richmond midfielder Dion Prestia are facing criminal charges related to an alleged fight at a Mornington Peninsula pub in December 2024. Both players have denied involvement, claiming they were not present during the incident. They have requested the charges be withdrawn and were scheduled to appear in Frankston Magistrates Court on February 20. The AFL integrity unit is separately investigating the situation.
