Florida Cold Snap Stuns Thousands of Invasive Iguanas
A rare cold snap in Florida has resulted in thousands of iguanas becoming 'cold stunned' and immobile, with some falling from trees.
The state's wildlife agency has indicated that these iguanas are suitable for capture.
Understanding 'Cold Stunning'
Iguanas, like other reptiles, are ectotherms, meaning their internal body temperature is influenced by external weather conditions. Temperatures in Florida have fallen below 50F (10C), causing their internal processes to slow down, leading to cold stunning.
Public Assistance for Invasive Species
Florida's wildlife agency has requested public assistance in capturing these immobile iguanas, as they are an invasive species not native to the state. Over 2,000 cold-stunned iguanas have been reported as handed over to authorities.
