Nintendo Brings Virtual Boy Games to Switch Online with New Accessories
Nintendo has introduced Virtual Boy games to its Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service, effective February 17. This release includes two accessories designed to enable stereoscopic 3D gameplay: a plastic enclosure replicating the original Virtual Boy console, priced at $99.99, and a more affordable cardboard option at $25. Seven Virtual Boy titles are available at launch, with additional games planned for future release.
Virtual Boy Integration and Accessories
The Virtual Boy library is now accessible to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. To experience these games with stereoscopic 3D, users require an accessory.
The primary accessory is a physical enclosure for the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, utilizing lenses to deliver a 3D effect. It reproduces the original 1995 Virtual Boy's appearance, featuring a red-and-black plastic body, a black rubber facemask, and a wire tabletop stand. While it includes molded focus and IPD (interpupillary distance) knobs, IPD adjustment is managed through the Nintendo Switch Online Virtual Boy application.
The accessory does not include a dedicated controller; Virtual Boy games are compatible with existing Switch and Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers. A lower-cost cardboard accessory is also available.
The original Virtual Boy, launched in 1995, was discontinued after one year with a library of less than two dozen games. Similar to the original, the new accessory requires tabletop placement for viewing. Games feature built-in pause timers, ranging from 10 to 30 minutes, intended to mitigate eye strain. The updated system is stated to reduce eye strain compared to the original, offering clearer visuals, attributed to the higher resolution and frame rate of Switch and Switch 2 screens.
Some users have reported challenges in finding a comfortable viewing angle, experiencing eye strain, and neck discomfort when using the accessory due to the red graphics, with recommendations for frequent breaks. While games can run in portable mode without an accessory, their display size makes them largely unplayable without the magnifying optics.
A planned feature allowing users to change the color palette from the original red to yellow, green, or gray will not be available at launch but is expected later in the year. Access to the game library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.
The Initial Game Lineup and Future Releases
The launch lineup for Virtual Boy games includes seven titles:
- Virtual Boy Wario Land: A platformer that incorporates interactive background layers utilizing stereoscopic 3D.
- Teleroboxer
- Galactic Pinball
- 3D Tetris
- Golf
- Red Alarm: A rail shooter featuring wireframe models without shading.
- The Mansion of Innsmouth: A first-person dungeon crawler.
Nintendo plans to release nine additional Virtual Boy titles through 2026. These include two previously unreleased games: D-Hopper, an overhead adventure, and Zero Racers, a racing game with wireframe graphics. Other planned releases include Mario Clash, Mario's Tennis, Virtual Bowling, V-Tetris, Space Invaders Virtual Collection, and Vertical Force. Eight other original Virtual Boy games have not been confirmed for the service.
Broader Context: Expanding Nintendo Switch Online
The addition of Virtual Boy games is part of Nintendo's ongoing strategy to expand its subscription service offerings with classic game libraries.
This initiative supports both the original Switch and the newer Switch 2, which has sold over 17 million units in its first half-year.
