Nintendo's Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Revealed

Nintendo has provided details for "Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream" ahead of its release on April 16 for Switch and Switch 2.

The information confirms the inclusion of same-sex relationships and non-binary options, fulfilling a previous commitment by Nintendo to offer greater inclusivity.

Background on Inclusivity Pledge

The original "Tomodachi Life" for 3DS, released in 2013, received criticism due to the absence of same-sex romance options. Players initiated a social media campaign advocating for their inclusion.

Nintendo initially stated the game was not a "real-life simulation" and did not intend "social commentary." The company later apologized and pledged to be "more inclusive" in any future installments, stating it could not implement such a significant change for the 3DS version.

New Character Customization Features

More than ten years later, Nintendo has implemented these changes. Details from the "Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct" indicate that players can select from three gender identities when creating Miis: male, female, or non-binary.

Additionally, players can choose any combination of relationship preferences from these options, allowing for the creation of characters identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, or heterosexual. Character customization also includes facial features, body shape, personality, and synthesized voices.

Gameplay Overview

Once Miis are created, players manage their island life without direct control. Gameplay involves encouraging Mii growth through feeding, gifting, and creating new neighbors for social interaction. Players can also act as matchmakers to foster social bonds.

Events may occur independently, and players can stay informed via the island's News Channel. Available purchases for Miis include outfits from the clothing store, food from the supermarket, apartment decor from the Renovation Centre, and various items from the market stall. A photo studio is also available.

Miis may request island improvements, and players can decorate outdoor spaces with items like fences, picnic benches, new houses, and additional terrain from the Island Design Centre. Players can also assign quirks and traits to Miis or place them at points of interest for unique interactions.

The game features a Studio Workshop for designing 2D pets, customizing food, clothing, and TV channels. The game maintains elements of romance, including love triangles and marriage, and allows for shared housing for up to nine Miis.
