"On This Day… 1776": Aronofsky and Google DeepMind Launch AI-Enhanced Historical Series

A new historical series titled "On This Day… 1776" is being produced by Darren Aronofsky's Primordial Soup in partnership with Google DeepMind. This short-form series, which utilizes SAG voice actors and AI visuals, is set to be released on Time's YouTube channel.

Reimagining the Revolutionary War

The series focuses on key moments from the Revolutionary War period in 1776. Its visuals are described as a combination of traditional filmmaking tools and emerging AI capabilities. Each episode will be released on the 250th anniversary of the specific historical event it portrays.

Initial Episodes and Release Schedule

The initial episodes, released Thursday, feature George Washington raising the Continental Union Flag in Somerville, Massachusetts, and Benjamin Franklin encouraging Thomas Paine to write "Common Sense." Subsequent episodes are scheduled for weekly release throughout the sestercentennial year.

Production and Creative Vision

Aronofsky executive produces the series alongside his writing partners Ari Handel and Lucas Sussman. Sussman leads the writing team, supported by additional editors, artists, directors, and designers.

The project's stated goal is to reframe the Revolution as a "fragile experiment" shaped by participants.

Salesforce supports the project, with its subsidiary Slack being integral to the production workflow.

AI's Role in Historical Storytelling

The application of AI in reconstructing historical scenes is presented as a method to mitigate the expense and logistical challenges often associated with physical production in historical dramas.

Darren Aronofsky has previously expressed interest in using AI for kinetic storytelling. This collaboration with Google DeepMind follows their earlier project, Eliza McNitt’s "Ancestra," which premiered at Tribeca.

Ben Bitonti, president of Time Studios, remarked on the initiative:

"The project exemplifies thoughtful, artist-led AI use that expands creative possibilities."

Broader Industry Context

This initiative contributes significantly to the ongoing discussion about AI's role in high-end storytelling. It contrasts with Disney's efforts to make AI video tools broadly accessible, and also differs from the reservations voiced by filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro regarding AI in filmmaking.
