Odessa A'zion Exits A24's 'Deep Cuts' Amid Casting Controversy

Odessa A’zion has announced her withdrawal from Sean Durkin’s A24 film "Deep Cuts." The decision came on Wednesday night, just 48 hours after her casting was initially revealed, following online criticism regarding the perceived "whitewashing" of her character.

The Withdrawal and Character Controversy

A’zion addressed the comments and concerns on Instagram Stories, specifically related to the character Zoe Gutierrez. In Holly Brickley’s 2023 novel, from which the film is adapted, Zoe Gutierrez is described as half Mexican and half Jewish.

"I am with ALL of you and I am NOT doing this movie. Fuck that. I’m OUT."

The actress further elaborated on her initial acceptance of the role:

"I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I hadn’t read the book and should have paid more attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know???"

A’zion concluded her statement by emphasizing her principles regarding casting. "I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am NOT one of them." She expressed anticipation for the eventual casting of the role.

About the Film: 'Deep Cuts'

The film "Deep Cuts" is set in the 2000s and centers on two music-obsessed individuals in their 20s. Drew Starkey and Cailee Spaeny are currently set to star, with Spaeny cast as music critic Percy and Starkey as a songwriter and love interest.

Sean Durkin is slated to direct from his own script. He is also producing the film alongside Eli Bush, Ronald Bronstein, and Josh Safdie. Blake Mills is attached to compose the original music for the feature.
