Weill Family Foundation Donates $171 Million to UC Davis

The Weill Family Foundation, led by former Citigroup CEO Sandy Weill and his wife Joan Weill, has announced a $171 million donation to the University of California (UC), Davis. This contribution represents one of the largest donations ever made to veterinary medicine worldwide.

Inspired by Angel's Care

The couple's decision to make this donation was influenced by the treatment their dog, Angel, received for lymphoma at UC Davis in 2018.

Joan Weill stated that Angel's care left a significant impression on their family, leading to their continued engagement and inspiration from the school's commitment to team science and solving health challenges.

Angel has since passed away, and the Weills now have another dog named Sweet Pea.

Hospital Naming and Future Initiatives

In recognition of this substantial gift, the university's veterinary hospital will be named after Sandy and Joan Weill. UC Davis plans to utilize the donation for the construction of a new teaching hospital and to fund clinical research initiatives.

Dr. Mark Stetter of UC Davis noted that the gift will empower the institution to drive discoveries, enhance access to world-class education, and foster new insights connecting veterinary and human health.
