Zoey Deutch Embodies Jean Seberg in Richard Linklater's Nouvelle Vague
Richard Linklater's latest film, Nouvelle Vague, pays tribute to the seminal French New Wave cinema. Set in 1959 Paris, the movie delves into the production of Jean-Luc Godard’s iconic film, Breathless.
Actress Zoey Deutch takes on the role of Jean Seberg, who was cast by Godard as an expatriate student and newspaper vendor. Deutch's portrayal meticulously captures Seberg's distinctive style, including her American-accented French and unique physical mannerisms.
"Initially, she did not fully understand the groundbreaking nature of Breathless, noting that its innovations had since been integrated into mainstream cinema."
Deutch revealed that when Linklater first discussed the role with her in 2014, she was 19 and unfamiliar with both Seberg and Breathless. She dedicated two years to learning French for the part. She suggests that viewing Godard's original film alongside Linklater’s new work could effectively highlight its original boldness.
Seberg at a Crossroads
Jean Seberg's early career saw her in lead roles in films such as Otto Preminger's Saint Joan (1957) and Bonjour Tristesse. Linklater’s film captures Seberg at a crucial moment in her career, portraying her skepticism about Godard's potential as a director even as she sought out new professional opportunities.
Linklater’s film depicts Seberg at a pivotal moment, expressing skepticism about Godard's potential as a director while also seeking new opportunities.
Deutch articulated Seberg's feeling that Godard perceived her more as an 'idea' than a 'person,' a sentiment Deutch found particularly resonant for young women navigating the film industry. Following Breathless, Seberg's filmography included notable works such as Lilith (1964) and Paint Your Wagon (1969).
A Life Beyond the Screen
Jean Seberg’s later life, which concluded with her death at age 40 in 1979, was profoundly affected by an FBI harassment campaign. This campaign was initiated in response to her support for the Black Panther Party and infamously included the dissemination of false rumors regarding her pregnancy.
While Deutch conducted extensive research into Seberg's complex life, Linklater guided the cast to concentrate on portraying the characters as young, ambitious artists at a specific point in time, prior to their eventual iconic status.
Zoey Deutch: From Childhood Acting to Current Prominence
Zoey Deutch comes from a creative family, with parents director Howard Deutch and actress Lea Thompson. She began acting classes at the tender age of five, encouraged by her mother to explore improv.
Now 31, Deutch has built a diverse resume since her debut at 15. Her recent projects include roles in The Outfit and Juror No 2, as well as her Broadway debut in Our Town. She also starred in Jan Komasa’s dystopian film, Anniversary. At a recent Sundance event, Deutch expressed her appreciation for community solidarity in America, while also critiquing governmental actions concerning issues such as ICE.
The release of Nouvelle Vague is widely anticipated to further elevate Deutch's prominence in the industry.
