Eli Katoa's Road to Recovery After Serious Collision
Manly player Lehi Hopoate recently discussed an accidental collision involving his Tongan teammate, Eli Katoa, which occurred during a warm-up session late last year. The incident preceded a match against New Zealand.
The Collision and Subsequent Complications
Hopoate and Katoa collided while both players were going for a high ball. Despite the initial head knock, Katoa was cleared to play in the match. However, he subsequently sustained two more head knocks during the game itself.
Following the second in-game incident, Katoa experienced a seizure on the sideline and was immediately transported to the hospital. He received urgent treatment for a bleed on the brain and subsequently underwent brain surgery.

Hopoate's Perspective and Katoa's Recovery Timeline
Hopoate expressed mixed emotions regarding the event, acknowledging his involvement in Katoa's initial concussion. He stated that had he known the potential severe consequences, he would have advised Katoa not to play. However, Katoa was cleared by the Tongan medical staff and was determined to represent his country.
As a result of his serious injury and recovery, Katoa has been ruled out for the entire 2026 season. He is anticipated to make his return to play for the Storm in the 2027 season.
