Ukrainian Tennis Player Oleksandra Oliynykova Criticizes Aryna Sabalenka Over Gucci Partnership

Ukrainian tennis player Oleksandra Oliynykova has criticized Belarusian world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka following Sabalenka's collaboration with Gucci. This latest criticism builds on earlier comments by Oliynykova, who has advocated for Russian and Belarusian players to be banned from the sport due to their countries' involvement in the war.

Oliynykova's Statements

Oliynykova, who trains in Kyiv, previously stated that the presence of top Belarusian and Russian players on tour was "very wrong," despite their competing under neutral flags.

"The presence of top Belarusian and Russian players on tour was 'very wrong'."

After Sabalenka's Gucci partnership was announced, Oliynykova posted on Instagram, questioning the brand's choice and the perceived value of athletic prowess over human lives.

Oliynykova also referenced Sabalenka having signed a letter supporting Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko in 2020 during protests following an election described as a sham by Western governments.

Sabalenka's Response

Sabalenka has consistently stated that she does not support the Russian invasion of Ukraine or Belarusian President Lukashenko, expressing a desire for peace in Ukraine. When asked about Oliynykova's initial comments, Sabalenka reiterated her position.

"I want peace, and if I could change the situation, I would do it."

At the 2023 French Open, Sabalenka initially declined to comment on the 2020 letter but later publicly denounced the war.

"I don’t support the war. I don’t support Lukashenko right now."

Sabalenka's management and the Women’s Tennis Association have been contacted for comment.
