Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, 81, has been pardoned by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and permitted to depart the country. Sansal was reported to be en route to Germany via a military plane on Wednesday evening.
This decision follows a direct request from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to President Tebboune. President Steinmeier had requested the pardon for Sansal, citing his advanced age and health condition, to facilitate medical treatment in Germany. President Tebboune stated he responded favorably to the request, attributing the decision to humanitarian motives.
Sansal was arrested upon arrival at Algiers airport approximately one year prior. In July, he received a five-year prison sentence on charges of undermining national unity through remarks concerning Algeria's borders. He is currently being treated for prostate cancer.
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Sansal by phone following his release. France had previously engaged in efforts to reduce diplomatic tensions with Algeria regarding the case. Sansal has been a known critic of the Algerian government.
