At least 37 individuals died and multiple others sustained injuries when a bus departed a highway and fell into a ravine in Peru's southern Arequipa region.
The incident occurred during the early hours of Wednesday on a section of the Pan-American Highway. This highway connects Peru with Chile.
Local reports indicate the bus, transporting 60 passengers, collided with a pickup truck on a curve. Following the collision, the bus went off the road and descended approximately 200 meters (650 feet) to the banks of the Ocoña River.
Bus accidents are a recurring event in Peru, particularly during nighttime hours and on mountainous routes. Contributing factors frequently include road conditions, vehicle speed, and the presence of traffic safety signage.
