Danish Man Convicted for Online Copyright Infringement
A Danish man has been convicted for distributing nude scenes from copyrighted films and television series on the social media platform Reddit. A police document indicates the individual shared 347 clips of nude scenes within a Reddit group he moderated. These clips accumulated 4.2 million views.
The Danish police reported that the man received a seven-month suspended sentence for copyright infringement. Legal experts noted this prosecution utilized a seldom-used clause in Danish copyright law. The presiding judge determined that by extracting these scenes from their original context, the man had infringed upon the "moral rights" of the artists involved.
Additional Convictions and Platform Activity
The conviction also includes the sharing of more than 25 terabytes of copyrighted data. Operating under the Reddit username "KlammereFyr," the individual posted sexually explicit scenes featuring over 100 actresses between March 2022 and May 2023. This activity occurred within a subreddit that he moderated, which had over 6,000 members and reportedly encouraged users to request specific actor clips.
Legal Action and Impact
In 2023, The Rights Alliance (TRA), a Danish anti-piracy group, reported the case to law enforcement on behalf of affected actors, directors, and producers. This action resulted in the closure of the subreddit. Andrea Vagn Jensen, an actress whose explicit scenes were shared, informed the Danish broadcaster DR that she perceived a distinction between performing nude in a film and having those scenes disseminated on Reddit, describing the latter as "abuse."
