Williams to Miss Initial F1 2026 Barcelona Pre-Season Test

View source

Williams Racing will not participate in the initial F1 2026 pre-season testing session scheduled for late January in Barcelona. The team stated its decision is driven by a focus on achieving maximum car performance for the 2026 season, while sources indicate the team has encountered difficulties in passing mandatory FIA crash tests.

Barcelona Pre-Season Shakedown Details

The testing session, referred to as a "shakedown," is scheduled to take place over three days, from January 26 to 30, at the Circuit de Catalunya. This event was open to all eleven F1 teams, offering additional track time beyond the standard pre-season testing in Bahrain. Its purpose is to aid teams in the transition to adjusted regulations for the upcoming season.

Reasons for Williams' Absence

Williams has announced its decision to opt out of the Barcelona shakedown. The team cited a strategic focus on the development of its 2026 car to maximize performance. Concurrently, sources familiar with the situation suggest that Williams has faced challenges in passing the FIA's mandatory crash tests, which could also contribute to the team's anticipated absence.

Impact and Future Plans

Missing the Barcelona shakedown could result in Williams losing one-third of its total nine permitted testing days before the season officially commences. This would potentially limit drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz to a maximum of three days each in the FW48 car during the two subsequent Bahrain tests in February. The first official test in Bahrain is slated for February 11-13. Despite missing Barcelona, Williams plans to conduct its own private testing sessions prior to the Bahrain event.

Historical Context

This is not the first instance of Williams encountering delays in pre-season preparations. In 2019, the team missed the first two days of testing due to issues related to the construction and design of its FW42 car, only commencing its running on the third day at the Barcelona circuit.
