Australian cricketer David Warner has committed to another season with the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League (BBL), which will extend his playing career in the league past the age of 40.
Warner recently concluded a successful BBL campaign, leading the tournament in runs scored with 433 and being named captain of the tournament's team. During the 2025-26 season, he maintained an average of 86.60. Over the past two seasons, the former Australian Test opener has accumulated over 400 runs, including two centuries this month. Warner expressed confidence in his continued ability to contribute to the team and the game.
In a statement, Warner said, "I’m really excited to commit to another season with Thunder." He acknowledged the team's challenging performance in the past season, stating, "we are a much better team than what we put on the field this season and were unable to put a consistent game together." He attributed his decision to stay to the significant support from the fans. Warner added, "I feel I’ve got plenty more to give to this team and to this game. I felt pretty comfortable with my performance and was proud to give the team a fighting chance. We’ve already begun reviewing the season and putting the right plans in place to ensure we deliver a much stronger campaign in BBL16."
Warner's contract extension means the Sydney Thunder have two roster positions remaining to fill before the competition's contracting embargo takes effect on January 27.
Thunder General Manager Trent Copeland commented on the re-signing, stating, "We’re stoked that Davey is staying on for another season. He’s had an incredible year, not only is he one of the greatest T20 players in the world over the last 15 years, but still very clearly one of the best batters in the BBL and his fitness levels are elite." Copeland also highlighted Warner's strong leadership and determination to improve the squad after a disappointing season.
