Stan Wawrinka, Novak Djokovic, and Marin Cilic have all progressed to the third round of the Australian Open men's singles tournament. This marks their continued presence at this stage, seventeen years after their initial joint appearance in Melbourne's third round.

Wawrinka's advancement, at age 40, makes him the first player of that age or older to reach the third round of a men's singles Grand Slam since Ken Rosewall at the 1978 Australian Open.

Stan Wawrinka's Progression and Retirement Plans

Forty-year-old Stan Wawrinka secured his place in the third round after a five-set victory against French qualifier Arthur Gea. The challenging match lasted over four and a half hours, with a final score of 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10/3).

Wawrinka, currently ranked 139th in the world and a 2014 Australian Open champion, received a wildcard entry into the main draw. He has spent a considerable seven hours and 53 minutes on court en route to the last 32.

The Swiss star has indicated that he is competing in his final Australian Open, as he plans to retire at the end of the season.

He stated that the emotions surrounding this last appearance are unique and serve as motivation.

Ahead of their third-round encounter, Taylor Fritz, 28, who will face Wawrinka, remarked that he does not envision himself playing professional tennis at the age of 40.

Fritz also stated that he looked up to Wawrinka during his younger years and anticipates a challenging and potentially lengthy five-set match, commending Wawrinka's sustained physicality and competitive spirit.

Djokovic and Cilic Advance

Novak Djokovic, 38, advanced to the third round after securing a victory in straight sets against Francesco Maestrelli. Djokovic is currently pursuing his 11th Australian Open title.

Marin Cilic, 37, also progressed in straight sets, defeating the 21st seed, Denis Shapovalov. Wawrinka commented on Cilic's return, noting his injury last year.
