Brandon Smith's Recovery Journey

Souths player Brandon Smith disclosed he entered a four-week rehabilitation facility last year to address mental health and alcohol abuse. Smith stated he has maintained alcohol abstinence for over 100 days and regularly attends Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings.

Smith indicated that he previously upheld a "party boy identity" and is now concentrating on redefining himself as a professional rugby league athlete. He is currently facing betting and drug charges in a Queensland court. Smith clarified that his decision to enter the facility was voluntary, undertaken to modify his lifestyle and improve his standing with his new team, Souths.

Coaching Developments

Brad Arthur's Potential International Role

Former Parramatta Eels head coach Brad Arthur is reportedly considering the vacant England head coaching position for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. Arthur, who was dismissed by the Eels in 2024, is currently associated with the Leeds Rhinos in the Super League. Willie Peters is identified as an early frontrunner for the role, with other individuals linked including Brian McDermott, Sam Burgess, and James Graham.

Jamie Soward Resigns from Fetu Samoa

Jamie Soward has resigned from his role as head coach of Fetu Samoa, the Women’s International Rugby League team. This decision precedes the 2026 Rugby League World Cup by several months. Soward cited a career change and adjusted personal priorities as reasons for his departure. Following this, Samoa, along with France and Papua New Guinea, is seeking a new head coach.
