View source

Microsoft overhauls the Xbox handheld and PC experience, rolling out significant updates for the ROG Ally, a new Windows 11 "Xbox mode," and AI-powered upscaling.

Docked Experience Improvements for ROG Xbox Ally

A smoother transition to the big screen. Updates for the ROG Xbox Ally now adjust the device’s performance and interface when connected to an external monitor or television via a dock.

Display and Input Changes:

  • When docked, the game display moves to the external screen, and the handheld's display automatically turns off, moving away from a mirroring setup.
  • The device optimizes resolution, refresh rate, and HDR output for the connected external display.
  • When an Xbox controller is connected while the device is docked, the handheld controls are disabled, and the paired controller becomes the primary input method.

Interface Adjustments:

  • The on-screen interface and performance when docked are being adjusted to resemble the Xbox dashboard.

Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) Preview

AI-powered visuals for docked play. A preview of a feature called Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR) is rolling out to members of the Xbox Insiders program.

  • The feature uses on-device intelligence (AI) to upscale visuals.
  • According to sources, the feature is designed to deliver visuals comparable to 1440p or higher, potentially improving performance and image quality on 4K displays.
  • Initially, the feature will be available only when the device is docked.

Library and Input Features

Unify your game collection. A new "Collective Library" feature has been added to the Xbox app that aggregates games from multiple platforms and PC storefronts into a single view, reducing the need to navigate different launchers.

Enhanced Vibration Settings: The update includes new calibration tools for haptic feedback, intended to provide more nuanced tactile response.

Windows 11 Xbox Mode

A controller-first interface arrives. Microsoft has begun rolling out a dedicated "Xbox mode" for Windows 11 PCs.

  • The mode provides a controller-friendly interface designed for devices such as handhelds, laptops, desktops, and tablets connected to a TV.
  • The interface is intended to simplify launching games and accessing social features, removing the need for mouse and keyboard interaction.
  • The rollout began in select markets, with a global expansion planned over the coming weeks.

Additional Ecosystem Updates

Expanding support across devices. In a separate announcement, Xbox detailed several other updates across its gaming ecosystem.

Arm-Based PC Support: The Xbox PC app now supports Arm-based Windows 11 PCs. Users can download and play titles from the app catalog, including those available through an Xbox Game Pass subscription, locally on these devices.

Game Save Sync Indicator: A Game Save Sync Indicator has been implemented across PC and handheld devices. The feature provides real-time visibility into cloud save status, informing players when their gameplay progress is synced across devices.

Cloud Gaming on Smart TVs: Xbox has partnered with V (formerly VIDAA) to integrate the Xbox app into select Hisense and V homeOS-powered Smart TVs starting in 2026. This will allow Xbox Game Pass subscribers to stream games directly on supported TVs via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Mouse and Keyboard Support: Xbox has increased support for wired USB mice and keyboards across select games and apps for Xbox consoles and Windows devices.
