49ers Confirm Brandon Aiyuk's Departure

San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch confirmed on Wednesday that wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will depart from the team this offseason. Aiyuk's last game was on October 20, 2024, when he sustained a torn ACL and MCL.

Contract and Injury Details

Aiyuk had previously conducted a hold-in during the 2024 training camp before signing a four-year, $120 million extension prior to the season's commencement. He played in seven games before his injury.

The 49ers voided the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract last summer. This action followed his non-participation in rehab sessions and meetings, leading to his placement on the reserve/left squad list.

Management Statements

John Lynch stated that the transaction related to Aiyuk's departure would occur in due course, adding, "I think it’s safe to say that he’s played his last snap with the Niners." Lynch also expressed regret regarding the situation, indicating a review of contributing factors.

Coach Kyle Shanahan commented on the situation, describing Aiyuk's separation from the team as unprecedented in his 22 years of coaching. He characterized the circumstances as confusing for the organization, ultimately leading to the decision to move forward.
