Brandon Aiyuk’s Departure from the San Francisco 49ers Appears Imminent

The San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk are on a path toward separation following a season-long contract dispute, a severe knee injury, and a breakdown in communication. General Manager John Lynch has stated that Aiyuk has likely played his last snap for the team, though no official transaction has been finalized as of the start of the offseason program.

"I think it’s safe to say that he’s played his last snap with the Niners." — John Lynch, General Manager

Timeline of Events

2024 Offseason: Contract Negotiations

Aiyuk did not participate in the 49ers' 2024 offseason program or training camp due to a contract dispute. He eventually signed a four-year, $120 million contract extension in August 2024.

2024 Season: Injury and Roster Status

Aiyuk played in seven games during the 2024 season. On October 20, 2024, he sustained a multi-ligament knee injury (torn ACL and MCL) during a Week 7 game, which ended his season.

Post-Injury: Rehabilitation and Separation

During his rehabilitation, Aiyuk stopped attending the team's facility and ceased communication with the organization. On December 13, 2024, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list. The team subsequently voided the salary guarantees in his contract.

Management Statements

General Manager John Lynch has made several public statements regarding Aiyuk's status:

  • In February 2025, he stated no move would occur before the new league year began on March 11.
  • On April 20, he indicated the team would re-evaluate if a trade did not occur during the NFL Draft.
  • After the draft, he said the team had no plans to cut Aiyuk "anytime soon."
  • Lynch later confirmed that Aiyuk would depart the team.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan described Aiyuk's separation from the team as "unprecedented" in his 22 years of coaching. He characterized the circumstances as confusing for the organization.

Player Statements

On Instagram, Aiyuk posted a video stating that the 49ers are "scared" to let him go and accused the organization of being untruthful about his performance:

"The truth is they scared. They gonna say, 'BA did this, BA did that,' but what they not gonna say is, 'BA sucks at football,' because they know how I get."

Aiyuk has posted photographs of himself wearing Washington Commanders gear in recent weeks.

Potential Trade Destination: Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are viewed as a potential landing spot for Aiyuk. Commanders General Manager Adam Peters previously worked for the 49ers. Aiyuk has a personal relationship with Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Multiple sources indicate the Commanders believe Aiyuk could improve their receiving corps but are unwilling to trade draft assets and would only consider a short-term, incentive-laden contract.
