View source

Ryan Papenhuyzen has announced his retirement from rugby league, detailing the circumstances that led to his decision to step away from the sport. The announcement followed his release from the Melbourne Storm contract, with initial speculation suggesting a move to R360 (rugby union) or a year-long break from the sport.

Papenhuyzen clarified his decision on the "167" podcast, which he co-hosts. He recounted a significant head knock in the final minutes of a game against the Broncos during the last round of the season. This incident left him emotional and prompted him to question the personal cost of continuing to play rugby league.

He stated that the head injury served as the catalyst for subsequent conversations and his decision-making process. While his initial plan was to take a year off, he now believes he is retired from the sport entirely. He acknowledged that while a move to rugby union had been discussed and he was keen on it, the incident against Brisbane solidified his decision to fully retire.

Papenhuyzen is now pursuing new challenges outside of football, indicating an interest in psychology and new experiences, such as helping people. He recognized the difficulty of leaving the professional sports environment and its financial benefits. Throughout his career, Papenhuyzen played 113 games for the Storm, where he won a premiership and scored 77 tries.
