Kim Petras announced on Tuesday that she has formally requested to be released from her contract with Republic Records, a Universal Music Group label.
Background of the Dispute
Petras stated on X that her upcoming album, "Detour," has been completed for six months, but Republic Records has neither provided a release date nor compensated her collaborators for their work. She expressed a desire to regain control over her career and to independently fund and curate her music.
Republic Records has not responded to requests for comment regarding Petras's claims.
Career Timeline and Achievements
Petras signed with Republic Records in 2021. Since then, she has released the EP "Slut Pop" and studio albums "Feed the Beast" and "Problématique." Her collaboration with Sam Smith on "Unholy" in 2022 achieved double-platinum status and earned a Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Petras also stated that she self-funded a music video for a single which Republic Records has reportedly not released. She criticized record labels for their perceived lack of support for artists whose music does not align with current TikTok trends or specific commercial aesthetics.
Future Plans
Petras indicated her intention to release "Detour" independently, though a release date has not yet been announced.
