Elina Svitolina's Season Interruption and Return to Tennis
Elina Svitolina, a professional tennis player, concluded her 2025 season prematurely following Ukraine's loss to Italy in the Billie Jean King Cup semifinals in September. Her decision was prompted by a focus on mental health, stating she was "not in the right emotional space" and felt unprepared to compete at the required level.
Svitolina, who is married to Gaƫl Monfils and has a daughter, emphasized that her sport required readiness to fight and give her all, which she felt unable to do mentally or emotionally at the time. She expressed that her priority was maintaining mental health, even if it meant sacrificing potential advancements in rankings or qualification for events like the WTA Finals.
Return to Competition
Svitolina, a former world number three, made her return to the WTA Tour in Auckland earlier this month, where she secured a victory. She has since achieved consecutive straight-sets wins in the opening two rounds of the Australian Open. The 31-year-old, currently ranked 12th globally, stated during her post-match conference that stepping back last year was the correct decision for her well-being.
She noted that the break allowed her to feel "more refreshed" and better prepared to handle challenging match situations. Svitolina indicated that pushing herself to complete the previous season might have prevented her participation in the current Australian Open due to mental and physical exhaustion. She is scheduled to compete against 23rd seed Diana Shnaider in the third round.
