A 22-year-old man was charged with affray, recklessly causing injury, assault with a weapon, and possessing a prohibited weapon. He was released on bail to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court in November 2026. Five other individuals, aged 13 to 16, were released without charge pending further investigation.

A Werribee-bound train service was cancelled as a result of the incident. The area under the clocks at the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets was cordoned off around 10:30 PM.

The victim sustained a laceration to his lower back and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The remainder of the group fled before police arrived. No arrests have been made.

Police are investigating and have not determined what weapons were used. In related context, Victoria Police reported a record 17,428 knives and edged weapons seized in 2025, averaging 48 per day. Stabbings in Victoria fell 11% over the past year, from 698 to 620, but stabbings involving child offenders doubled to 168.

Mernda Railway Station Death (March 7, 2026)

Incidents in Melbourne's Central Business District

Queen Street Machete Attack (March 9-10, 2026)

Two people were hospitalised following an alleged machete attack near Queen and Flinders streets at approximately 2:30 AM. An offender allegedly attacked a man and a woman. The woman, in her 20s, was transported to hospital in serious condition with upper-body injuries. The man, also believed to be in his 20s, was treated for mid-body injuries and taken to hospital in stable condition; he has since been discharged.

A man has been arrested and is undergoing police questioning. The event occurred during a weekend with high visitor numbers due to the F1 grand prix season opener and the Moomba Festival.

Incidents in Outer Suburbs

Croydon and Mooroolbark Attack (Date not specified)

A 64-year-old man was hospitalised with serious injuries after an attack with a machete in Melbourne's outer east. The victim's house in Croydon was targeted twice by a group of teenagers. They initially threw rocks at the house at 10:30 PM. After returning at 2:30 AM and resuming the rock-throwing, the man pursued them in his car to Manchester Road in Mooroolbark.

During an altercation there, a member of the group used a machete to injure the man before fleeing. Police reported that the man and the teenagers were not known to each other prior to the incident.

Lygon Street Double Stabbing (New Year's Eve 2025)

Four individuals were arrested in connection with a double stabbing on Lygon Street in Carlton. The incident occurred around 11:45 PM on New Year's Eve, resulting in serious injuries to a 20-year-old man from Heidelberg West and an 18-year-old man from New South Wales. The victims were reportedly attacked by a group armed with machetes and knives.

Victoria Police detectives from the gang crime squad, VIPER organised crime taskforce, and crime investigation unit conducted the arrests. A police spokesperson stated the incident is alleged to have been deliberate, with the parties involved known to each other.

Charges have been filed against two individuals: a 21-year-old Fitzroy man (violent disorder, intentionally causing serious injury, and affray) and a 17-year-old boy (same offences). Both were remanded in custody. Two other individuals, a 19-year-old from Carlton and a 21-year-old from Reservoir, were released pending further investigations.

Fitzroy Shooting and Related Investigations

Fatal Shooting of Ater Good (January 3, 2026)

A fourth individual, a 20-year-old man from Heidelberg, was charged with murder in connection with the drive-by shooting death of 16-year-old Ater Good. Good was killed near the intersection of Brunswick and King William streets in Fitzroy. Police seized two shotguns from a property during the arrest.

Three other men were previously charged with murder in relation to the incident: a 19-year-old Heidelberg West man, a 20-year-old Bundoora man, and a 21-year-old Heidelberg man (apprehended at Melbourne Airport). All three have been remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on June 15, 2026. Another 31-year-old Heidelberg man was arrested but released pending further inquiries.

Raids were conducted at three properties in Heidelberg and two in Heidelberg West.

Operation Firelong

Authorities are investigating potential connections between the Fitzroy shooting and the Lygon Street stabbing. Detectives, regional police, and special units have established Operation Firelong to investigate both alleged crimes and prevent further violence. Investigations are ongoing.

Government and Legislative Responses

Victoria legislated a ban on the sale of machetes in May 2025, which came into effect on September 1, 2025.

The government reported approximately 18,000 weapons surrendered or seized and 17,000 machetes removed from shelves since a 2025 amnesty. Legislation allowing individuals as young as 14 to be sentenced as adults for violent crimes was implemented on February 27, 2026.

Government Minister Harriet Shing stated that changes to bail laws, the machete ban, post-and-boast laws, and a violence reduction unit are showing results in dropping crime statistics. She said, "What we are doing is working."

Opposition spokesperson David Southwick criticized the government's policies, saying knife attacks continue to escalate. He stated, "Victorians want consequences, and it's clear that the machete policies of the government simply have not worked."

Police continue to request witnesses or anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
