University of Queensland (UQ) researchers have been awarded more than $5.5 million from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF). This funding, granted through the MRFF Clinical Trials Activity Grant, is intended to enhance healthcare across Australia.
The grant will support projects focused on improving health treatments, specifically in areas such as kidney dialysis and the safe administration of intravenous (IV) fluids to children.
Notable recipients and their projects for the 2024 MRFF Clinical Trials Activity Grant include:
- Associate Professor Yeoungjee Cho: Leading the STEP-PD trial, which investigates whether a gradual initiation of peritoneal dialysis, increasing over time, is more effective and safer than the standard full-dose approach for individuals experiencing kidney failure.
- Dr. Sainath Raman: Conducting research to compare saline and buffered IV fluids. The study aims to identify which fluid type is safer for critically ill children admitted to intensive care units, ultimately seeking to improve patient outcomes.
