Western Australia is actively preparing for a vibrant series of cultural events, showcasing a diverse array of performances ranging from burlesque and cabaret to acrobatics, street theatre, and live music across Perth and Fremantle.

These upcoming festivals highlight Western Australia's growing cultural scene, drawing both local and international talent and audiences.

Fringe World Perth Convenes

The Fringe World festival in Perth began on January 21 and is set to conclude on February 15, spanning 30 days. This year's program offers a rich variety, including burlesque, cabaret, and acrobatic performances.

One particularly noted act is "#since1994" by the Taiwanese company Eye Catching Circus, an all-female contemporary circus ensemble.

Creator Chih-Ling Mei stated the performance aims to challenge Asian gender stereotypes and address the oppression of women in Taiwan, reflecting the perspectives of women born between 1994 and 2000.

Arts Minister Simone McGurk officially launched the event, which features over 600 shows and involves more than 3,000 performers. Primary venues are located in Northbridge and the CBD, with additional events in Scarborough and Busselton. Notably, the newly reopened Liberty Theatre and the Blue Room Theatre, returning after a decade, are included this year. The popular Fountain Bar, a circular bar with a rooftop water feature, has also made a comeback.

Fringe World Perth is recognized as the third-largest fringe festival globally, following Edinburgh and Adelaide. Organizers are anticipating attendance to exceed 500,000 individuals. Tickets average $35, and the program is designed to be inclusive, incorporating community, free, and family-friendly events. This festival marks the start of Perth's lively festival season, with the Perth Festival scheduled to open two weeks later, featuring both local and international acts, with the East Perth Power Station designated as a central venue.

Fremantle International Street Arts Festival Commences

The Fremantle International Street Arts Festival (FISAF) is scheduled to enliven Fremantle, Western Australia, from April 3 to 6. The festival promises over 160 free and family-friendly performances staged across iconic locations.

Venues include Fremantle Prison, High Street, Market Street, and the bustling fishing boat harbour, ensuring widespread accessibility.

The event will showcase a dynamic range of acts, including street theatre, circus performances, comedy, and acrobatics. Among the featured performers is Chinese acrobat Cho Kairin, who will present impressive feats of balance and strength with his Super Acrobat Team. Live music performances are also planned from acts such as Boom! Bap! Pow! and Crazy Pony.

Local street performers from Fremantle will significantly contribute to the atmosphere, offering busking entertainment that includes captivating fire eating, magic, dancing, and juggling. For families, special activities are available, with mermaids and a pirate scheduled to appear at the Esplanade Hotel lagoon, alongside the exciting Bam Wow Amazing Show!
