Eric Bieniemy Returns to Kansas City Chiefs as Offensive Coordinator

View source

Eric Bieniemy has rejoined the Kansas City Chiefs as offensive coordinator following the 2025 NFL season. The move occurs after the Chiefs' 2025 season resulted in coaching staff changes. Bieniemy's 2025 season saw him coach the running backs for the Chicago Bears under first-year head coach Ben Johnson. The Bears won the NFC North and defeated the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, fielding a top-10 offense largely driven by its rushing attack. The Bears' rushing attack averaged 4.9 yards per attempt, ranking third in the NFL. Lead running back D’Andre Swift recorded career highs with 1,087 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns. Rookie running back Kyle Monangai, a seventh-round draft pick, gained 783 rushing yards during the regular season, averaging under 10 attempts per game. He finished 24th in the NFL for rushing yards and fifth among rookie running backs. Monangai achieved 176 yards over 24 carries against the Cincinnati Bengals and later ran for 130 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. Monangai stated that Bieniemy's coaching style, described as demanding and vocal, resonated with him. He highlighted Bieniemy's emphasis on achieving "four and a half" yards per carry on every play. Bieniemy compared Monangai to former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, who led the NFL in rushing as a rookie while Bieniemy was his position coach. Monangai's rookie rushing total of 783 yards would have surpassed any single rusher for the Kansas City Chiefs in the two preceding seasons. The Chiefs' run game is an area identified for improvement, and Bieniemy’s demonstrated ability to maximize individual player performance, as observed with Monangai, is expected to contribute to this.
