João Fonseca has withdrawn from the Australian Open due to a lingering lower back injury, stating he was not adequately prepared for the tournament. Fonseca had previously pulled out of Brisbane and Adelaide earlier this month. He cited a need for more rhythm and physical preparation, despite his back being at "100 per cent" according to him. During his match, Fonseca made 38 unforced errors and spent more time behind the baseline than usual. He plans to play on clay in South America next month.
Separately, Lorenzo Musetti advanced in his first-round match after Raphael Collignon retired in the fourth set due to an inability to continue. Musetti, currently ranked No.5, entered the tournament after reaching the final in Hong Kong. Collignon had a history of overcoming cramps, including a victory against Alex de Minaur in the Davis Cup in September.
