Alexei Popyrin Exits Australian Open First Round, Reflects on Performance Struggles

View source

Alexei Popyrin was eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open after a five-set defeat to Frenchman Alexandre Muller. This loss concludes a challenging Australian summer for Popyrin, following similar first-round exits at the Brisbane International and Adelaide International.

Popyrin's world ranking declined from a career-high of 19th to 54th by the end of the previous year, attributed to a mental health break, a back injury, and his inability to defend his 2024 Canadian Open title.

Following the match, Popyrin expressed frustration with his recent performance outcomes. He noted that despite significant effort and dedication to his career, the desired results have not materialized. He stated a need for introspection, acknowledging that his current trajectory "can't keep going on like this."

During the match, Popyrin held a two-sets-to-one lead and was ahead 4-2 in the fourth set, and then 5-2 in the tiebreak. He also served for the match at 5-3 in the fifth set but was unable to secure the win against Muller, who ultimately won the 10-point match tiebreak. Popyrin recorded 40 aces during the match.

He received treatment for a calf issue, which he described as a pre-existing condition. He also noted experiencing cramps on the court for the second consecutive year at this venue, attributing it partly to nerves and the desire to perform for the home crowd.

Popyrin has opted to withdraw from Australia's upcoming Davis Cup qualifying tie against Ecuador to focus on improving his world ranking.
