A Weekend of Tragedy: Multiple Fatalities Across Queensland and South Australia
A series of devastating traffic incidents across Queensland and South Australia over multiple days has resulted in numerous fatalities and serious injuries, marking one of the most tragic periods on the region's roads in recent memory.
At least 19 people died across both states in separate incidents spanning a single week.
Southern Queensland: Multiple Fatal Collisions
Bunya Highway, Taabinga (Kingaroy Area)
Three people died in a two-vehicle collision on the Bunya Highway at Taabinga, approximately 200 kilometers north-west of Brisbane. The incident occurred shortly after 10:00 PM.
- Vehicles Involved: A Dodge Ram ute and a Ford Ranger ute. The Dodge Ram caught fire following the collision.
- Fatalities:
- The male driver of the Dodge Ram, the sole occupant, died at the scene.
- The 44-year-old female driver of the Ford Ranger died at the scene.
- A 12-year-old female passenger in the Ford Ranger died at the scene.
- Injuries: A 13-year-old female passenger in the Ford Ranger sustained serious injuries. She was taken to Kingaroy Hospital and later airlifted to Queensland Children's Hospital in stable condition.
Police are appealing for information from the public. The Bunya Highway has since reopened near the intersection of Stuart Valley Drive and Toomeys Road.
Waterford Tamborine Road, Yarrabilba
Three people died and three others were injured in a two-car collision on Saturday at approximately 4:30 PM.
- Vehicles Involved: A white Toyota HiLux ute and a white Volkswagen station wagon. Both vehicles rolled over, and the ute caught fire.
- Fatalities:
- The 18-year-old male driver of the ute, from Marsden, died at the scene.
- The 65-year-old male driver of the Volkswagen, from Stafford Heights, died at the scene.
- A 33-year-old female passenger in the Volkswagen, from Kedron, died at the scene.
- Injuries:
- A 65-year-old woman from Stafford Heights, transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition.
- A 36-year-old man from Kedron, transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital in critical condition.
- A two-year-old girl, transported to Queensland Children's Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Emergency services used hydraulic cutting equipment to free a trapped passenger. The road was closed between Camp Cable Road and Dollarbird Drive for several hours.
New England Highway, Glen Aplin
A 92-year-old male passenger died in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday at approximately 2:00 PM.
- Incident Details: An SUV traveling south swerved off the highway to avoid a northbound car traveling on the wrong side of the road. The vehicles did not collide. The SUV struck a culvert, rolled several times, and hit a power pole.
- Casualties:
- A 92-year-old male passenger died at the scene.
- An 85-year-old female passenger was airlifted to Gold Coast University Hospital with critical injuries.
- The 20-year-old female driver sustained minor injuries.
- Investigation: Police allege the driver of the other vehicle, a light-colored sedan, did not stop. The driver is assisting with investigations.
Maudsland, Gold Coast Hinterland
A woman died and two others sustained serious injuries in a three-car collision on Sunday at noon.
- Vehicles Involved: A station wagon, a hatchback, and a dual cab ute.
- Casualties:
- The 41-year-old female driver of the station wagon, from Coomera, died at the scene.
- An 11-year-old female passenger in the station wagon was initially in a life-threatening condition, later reported as stable.
- The 19-year-old male driver of the hatchback sustained serious abdominal injuries.
- The female driver of the dual cab ute, in her 60s, was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Bus Rollover on Bruce Highway, Gumlu
A charter bus rolled over on the Bruce Highway near Gumlu, between Townsville and Bowen, on Thursday at approximately 4:00 PM.
"The bus, traveling from Cairns to Airlie Beach with 29 people on board, left the roadway and rolled onto its side."
- Fatalities: A 26-year-old woman of Argentine-Italian nationality, a passenger, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
- Injuries: Two passengers sustained significant head injuries and multi-system trauma, initially reported as life-threatening, later reported as stable. The 70-year-old male driver from Mackay sustained minor injuries. As of Friday morning, eight patients were in stable condition at Townsville University Hospital.
- Response: Emergency services responded with 11 ambulances, two rescue helicopters, and a Royal Flying Doctor Service plane.
This incident occurred on the same stretch of highway as a fatal Greyhound bus crash in 2024 that killed three women. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has commenced inquiries into potential safety law breaches.
Pacific Motorway, Loganholme
A woman in her 30s died after being struck by a vehicle on the northbound Pacific Motorway on Monday.
- Incident Details: The woman had been involved in a minor collision and had pulled over around 3:40 PM. While walking back to her car after exchanging details with the other driver, she was struck by a beige Holden Rodeo utility just before 4:00 PM in heavy rain.
- Fatalities: The woman sustained critical injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.
The motorway was closed northbound until after 8:30 PM following a subsequent multi-vehicle crash in the same area.
Brisbane Valley Highway, Near Lake Wivenhoe
One person died and two were injured in a head-on collision on Saturday at approximately 11:10 PM.
- Vehicles Involved: A white Holden Commodore and a black BMW, traveling in opposite directions.
- Fatalities: The 23-year-old female driver of the Holden Commodore, from Bracken Ridge, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
- Injuries:
- Her passenger, a 24-year-old man from Mango Hill, sustained significant pelvic and leg injuries.
- The 30-year-old female driver of the BMW, from Coominya, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Police are investigating reports that the Commodore was part of a larger group of vehicles, potentially linked to a vehicle gathering.
Esk-Hampton Road, Near Esk
A 26-year-old man died in a two-vehicle collision on Saturday at approximately 3:05 PM.
- Vehicles Involved: A Kia Cerato and a Toyota Kluger.
- Fatalities: The 26-year-old driver of the Kia Cerato, from Beaudesert, died.
- Injuries: The 55-year-old male driver of the Toyota Kluger, from Esk, was taken to Toowoomba Hospital in serious condition.
Logan Reserve: Head-On Collision
A 51-year-old woman from Victoria died in a head-on collision on School Road on Saturday at approximately 9:00 PM.
Police alleged the ute was traveling at high speed, attempting to overtake three vehicles on the wrong side of the road with its lights off.
- Vehicles Involved: A silver Ford Falcon ute and a grey Ford Focus.
- Fatalities: The 51-year-old woman, a passenger in the Ford Focus, died at the scene.
- Injuries:
- A two-year-old girl in the Ford Focus sustained significant head injuries, initially life-threatening, later stable.
- The 28-year-old female driver of the Ford Focus, the deceased woman's niece, sustained leg, hip, and back injuries.
- The 17-year-old female driver of the ute was not physically injured. Blood samples were taken for substance testing.
- Several teenage passengers in the ute were ejected, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.
Police are investigating if the ute was linked to a large-scale organized "hoon event" in the area at the time. Reports suggest the ute lacked number plates, was unregistered, and had its lights off before the crash.

Multiple other fatal incidents were reported across Queensland during the Easter weekend and following days.
- Thornlands: An 18-year-old Redland Bay man died Saturday after his motorbike collided with a car. Speed may have been a factor.
- East Palmerston: A 31-year-old Palmerston man died Saturday after losing control of a quad bike and crashing into a pole.
- Wishart: An 83-year-old Wellington Point man died Saturday evening from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash Thursday morning.
- Spring Mountain: A 21-year-old woman from Purga died Saturday following a collision between two Toyota LandCruisers on the Centenary Highway.
- Earlville (Cairns): An 89-year-old man died Saturday afternoon after being struck by a bus on Mulgrave Road.

Logan Central Police Shooting
A 27-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot by police on Ewing Road on Saturday at approximately 5:54 PM. Police responded to reports of an armed man with a knife. The man approached officers with the knife, and a single shot was fired. The man was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Tamborine Mountain Road (Scenic Rim)
A 52-year-old male motorcycle rider died in a multi-vehicle collision on Sunday. The crash involved a white Subaru Liberty, a grey BMW motorcycle, and a grey Nissan X-Trail. Five people were initially reported in life-threatening condition.
Kingsford Smith Drive, Hamilton
A multi-vehicle crash on Tuesday involved a stolen Range Rover, a Mazda CX-60, and a Toyota Hiace. Two adults were taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening conditions. Four individuals were arrested.

- Elimbah: One person sustained life-threatening injuries after a single vehicle struck a pole and caught fire.
- Kingston: Two men transported to hospital with potentially life-threatening conditions following a single-vehicle crash.
- Meadowvale: A woman sustained significant head and neck injuries in a single-vehicle crash. A toddler also sustained a head injury.
- Woodmillar: A man in his 60s was airlifted to hospital after his motorcycle collided with a kangaroo.
- Jandowae: A teenage boy sustained a significant leg injury after being thrown from a bull at the Jandowae Showgrounds.
Incidents in South Australia
Seven people have died in separate incidents across South Australia over a period of one week.
- Yattalunga: A seven-year-old girl died Sunday from injuries sustained Friday when an all-terrain vehicle rolled on a private property.
- Paracombe: Two male motorcyclists, aged 31 and 47, died Saturday after their motorcycles collided on Gorge Road.
- Ovingham: A 40-year-old male motorcyclist died Friday after his Harley Davidson struck a traffic light.
- Adelaide CBD: A 39-year-old woman died Wednesday after being struck by a bus.
- Nuriootpa: A 47-year-old man died in hospital following a collision between a truck and a ute. Two children, aged five and three, sustained serious injuries.
